Basic Information

While the Bald Cypress bonsai is a very popular bonsai it grows slowly. This tree is grown for its feather-like foliage and orange color in the fall. The Bald Cypress bonsai can be grown in a variety of soils; it's not a very picky tree. Cultivation can be successful in continental as well as northern climates; it is also commonly planted in Europe and Asia among other locations. The Bald Cypress bonsai prefers hot summer heat which will allow it to grow much quicker but when planted in areas with cool summer days, growth is healthy but much slower.

The Bald Cypress bonsai tree is especially good for someone who is just getting started as they are ridiculously easy to grow. If you live in Southern USA you may be able to find one growing outside your home! If this isn't the case most gardening centers/nurseries offer Bald Cypress bonsai starter trees at decent prices.

Selecting a Bald Cypress Bonsai

As soon as you have committed to growing a Bald Cypress bonsai you will have to decide how you are going to acquire it. Will you be starting from scratch by snatching one from nature or buying a starter tree already on it's way to becoming a beautiful piece of art?

If you plan on starting from scratch you should pick the tree you think will shape into the best looking piece of art. As discussed above, Bald Cypress bonsai can be found throughout the southern parts of the US so if you live in that area finding one will prove to be relatively easy. Otherwise you're looking at a trip to your local garden center or nursery.

With a tree from nature you're looking at making the first cuts yourself. This can be a frustrating process for a beginner. When decided where to cut we use the formula of the height being six times the width of the base. You make feel like you are removing all of the growth but don't worry! Your Bald Cypress will grow bigger and stronger than ever.

Should you decide you want to go the starter tree route you will save a lot of time. This is the route I would go if this is your first bonsai tree (as I'm sure it is for many readers). When buying starter trees you may want to consider what landscape you're going for while looking at the trees. Maybe you want to make a little miniature forest? It's all preference!

Caring For Your Bald Cypress Bonsai

The Bald Cypress Bonsai prefers to live in an almost swampy-state when watering (one of the many factors that make it a fantastic choice for a beginner to the art of bonsai). You should water the bonsai tree from above as if it were rainfall. The goal is to fill the pot almost to the very rim with water. In the summer-time you should aim to water your Bald Cypress bonsai twice a day to ensure it lives a long and healthy life.

The Bald Cypress also prefers to live outside (like most bonsai trees) and full sun! So keep that in mind when deciding on the placement of the tree.

You should also fertilize your Bald Cypress bonsai about once a week in the spring time and cutting that down to once every two weeks during the late spring and fall. Then you should stop fertilizing as winter approaches and fall goes away.
